When buying reflective vinyl for vehicles, price is usually the first thing buyers look at.
That makes sense. If you are buying hundreds or thousands of meters for a truck fleet, even a small difference in price can add up quickly.
But there is a problem with comparing reflective vinyl this way.
Two rolls can look almost the same in a product photo, while the price is quite different. The reason may have nothing to do with the supplier's profit margin. The film itself may be made with different materials, reflective structures, adhesives or specifications.
And these differences are not always obvious when the product is new.
They usually become more noticeable after the vinyl has been installed on a vehicle and exposed to sunlight, rain, washing and temperature changes for months.
So if you are sourcing reflective vinyl for vehicles, I would look at the product itself before looking at the price.
One of the first questions to ask a supplier is:
What is the base material?
You may come across PET, PC and PMMA reflective films. They are not simply different names for the same product. Each material has its own strengths and is better suited to certain applications.
The right choice depends on how long the vinyl needs to last, where the vehicle operates and how much you are willing to spend.
PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is commonly used in more economical film constructions.
Its main attraction is straightforward: it helps keep the product cost down.
PET also has good dimensional stability and can work well for applications where the reflective vinyl does not need to stay on the vehicle for many years.
Typical uses include:

Short-term fleet markings
Promotional vehicles
Temporary signage
Short-term projects
The limitation is that PET is generally not the first material I would choose for a demanding, long-term outdoor application.
That does not mean every PET reflective film is low quality. The construction of the film, coating, reflective layer and adhesive all matter.
If a supplier gives you a specific outdoor service-life claim, ask for the technical data rather than relying on the material name alone.
PC, or polycarbonate, is a step up when mechanical performance and outdoor durability become more important.
It offers good impact resistance and generally performs better in demanding outdoor conditions than more economical constructions.
For many commercial vehicle applications, PC is worth considering because it sits somewhere between cost and long-term performance.
Common applications include:

Transport vehicles
Company fleets
Industrial vehicles
Fleet identification
For an importer who needs a reliable product but does not necessarily need the highest-end material available, PC can be a practical option.
The important thing is to compare the complete specification rather than simply asking whether the film is "PC."
PMMA, or polymethyl methacrylate, is commonly found in higher-performance reflective film constructions.
One reason is its good resistance to outdoor exposure, particularly UV and weathering.
For vehicles that spend years on the road, these properties can become much more important than the initial price difference.
PMMA can be considered for applications such as:
Emergency vehicles
Long-distance transport fleets
Heavy-duty trucks
Commercial fleets
Vehicles where long-term nighttime visibility is important
It usually costs more than economical film constructions, but that extra cost can make sense when replacing the material later would be expensive or inconvenient.
For a large fleet, the cost of removing old material and installing new material can easily become more significant than the original difference in film price.

A reflective film's actual performance depends on much more than whether the substrate is PET, PC or PMMA. Reflective technology, film thickness, adhesive, manufacturing quality and testing results all need to be considered.
This is probably the first question I would ask a buyer.
If the vehicle is being wrapped for a six-month campaign, there is little reason to pay for a film designed for a much longer service life.
But the situation is different for a truck that will remain in the same fleet for several years.
Think about the expected service period before choosing the material:
Temporary project
Around one year
Several years
Long-term fleet application
The longer the expected service life, the more attention you should pay to UV resistance, weathering and adhesive performance.
The working environment matters just as much as the material.
A delivery truck operating in a mild climate does not necessarily face the same conditions as a vehicle that spends every day outdoors in strong sunlight and high humidity.
Consider:
Direct sunlight
UV exposure
Rain
Humidity
Temperature changes
Frequent washing
Dust and road contamination
If the vehicles will operate in a hot, sunny climate, I would pay particular attention to UV resistance and color stability.
If the fleet is washed frequently, adhesive performance becomes another important point.
The base material is only one part of a reflective vinyl.
After all, the reason you are buying reflective vinyl in the first place is visibility.
So don't forget to ask about the reflective construction and performance.
Depending on the application, you may need to compare:
Reflective technology
Retroreflectivity
Color
Optical uniformity
Performance after outdoor exposure
A film can look bright under a showroom light and still perform differently after months of outdoor use.
For professional vehicle applications, it is worth asking for the relevant technical data instead of judging the product only by appearance.
This is another part that buyers sometimes overlook.
The reflective layer can be excellent, but if the adhesive is not suitable for the vehicle surface, the finished result can still fail.
Typical problems include:
Edges lifting
Peeling
Bubbles
Poor adhesion
Difficult installation
The supplier should be able to tell you what type of adhesive is used and what surfaces it is designed for.
This is particularly important when the film needs to be applied to curved surfaces or vehicles with special paint finishes.
If you are sourcing reflective vinyl for vehicles from China, don't send every supplier only one question:
"What is your best price?"
You will probably get a price.
But you won't know exactly what you are comparing.
Instead, ask for the basic specification first.
What is the base material?
PET, PC or PMMA?
What is the total thickness?
What is the film construction?
What reflective technology is used?
What is the retroreflectivity?
Can you provide a technical data sheet?
What standards does the product meet?
What outdoor service life is specified?
Has the film been tested for UV resistance?
Has accelerated aging testing been carried out?
What were the test conditions?
What type of adhesive is used?
What surfaces is it suitable for?
What is the recommended application temperature?
Is it specifically designed for vehicle use?
Is it suitable for trucks?
Can it be installed on curved surfaces?
What installation method do you recommend?
Once you have this information, comparing quotations becomes much easier.
Let's say three suppliers give you the following offers:

The calculation changes.
Replacing reflective vinyl means more than buying another roll. There is also labor, removal of the old material and installation of the new one.
For a large fleet, those costs can become significant.
So when comparing products, I recommend looking at cost over the expected service period, not just the initial price per meter.
There isn't one answer for every vehicle.
PET may make sense when keeping the initial cost low is important.
PC can offer a reasonable balance between cost and performance.
PMMA is worth considering, especially when UV resistance and weathering are important.
But don't make the decision based on the material name alone.
A well-made PET product can be a better choice than a poorly made PMMA product for the wrong application.
The complete construction matters.
When choosing reflective vinyl for vehicles, I would not start with the cheapest quotation.
First decide what the vehicle actually needs.
How long will the vinyl stay on the vehicle?
What kind of weather will it face?
How important is nighttime visibility?
What type of surface will it be applied to?
Once these questions are clear, choosing between PET, PC and PMMA becomes much easier.
And when you ask suppliers for quotations, make sure everyone is quoting the same basic specification.
That is the easiest way to avoid comparing one inexpensive product with one premium product and assuming the price difference is simply the supplier's margin.
For professional vehicle applications, the cheapest reflective vinyl is not always the lowest-cost solution in the long run.
The right product is the one that gives you the performance you actually need without paying for specifications you don't need.
