Plastic safety chain is not a complicated product.
But if you are buying it in bulk, there are a few details that are easy to overlook.
Most buyers will first ask about the diameter and price. For example, they may simply tell a supplier:
“I need 6 mm plastic chain.”
That's not quite enough.
I've seen two chains that were both called 6 mm, but had noticeably different weights per meter. They looked very similar in photos, yet the price was different.
So if you are sourcing plastic safety chain from China, here are the specifications I would check before comparing suppliers.
Most plastic safety chains on the market are made from PE (polyethylene).
PE is popular for this product because it is relatively light, flexible and resistant to normal outdoor use.
For traffic control, crowd control and temporary barriers, you usually don't need a rigid chain. It needs to be easy to handle and strong enough for its intended application.
However, simply saying "PE" doesn't tell you exactly how the finished chain will perform.
Different raw material formulations and production methods can result in different flexibility, weight and appearance.
If you are ordering a large quantity for the first time, I'd recommend getting a sample before confirming the order.
This is particularly important for plastic chains used outside.
Sunlight can gradually affect plastic products. Depending on the material and formulation, the color may fade and the plastic may become less flexible over time.
So I normally recommend asking the supplier:
Does the material contain a UV stabilizer?
Don't assume that every outdoor plastic chain has the same UV performance.
Color also makes a difference in what you see.
For example, fluorescent yellow can look very bright when the chain is new, but it may show fading more quickly under strong sunlight.
Red/white and black/yellow combinations are often more forgiving in outdoor applications.
If the chain will stay outside for a long time, ask the supplier what UV testing or outdoor exposure information they can provide.
This is probably the easiest way to explain why different suppliers quote different prices.
Suppose you ask three suppliers for:
6 mm plastic chain
You might expect the quotations to be very close.
But then you find that one supplier's chain weighs around 60 g per meter, while another is only around 47 g per meter.
Both may be described as 6 mm.
The difference is in the amount of material used and the actual construction of the links.
That's why, when I compare suppliers, I don't look at diameter alone.
I also ask:
What is the actual weight per meter?
This number is useful when comparing:
• Product cost
• Shipping weight
• Roll weight
• Material usage
• Overall construction
For a large order, this small detail can make quite a difference.
If you have bought plastic chain before, your supplier may have asked you for more than just the diameter.
You may also hear:
Inner Length
Outer Width
These measurements refer to the dimensions of the individual chain link.
The chain diameter is the thickness of the plastic strand.
The inner length is the length of the opening inside the link.
The outer width is the overall width of the link.
Why does this matter?
Because two chains with the same diameter can still have different link proportions.
This can affect the appearance of the chain and, more importantly, whether it works properly with an existing connector or accessory.
If you are replacing a chain you already use, sending the supplier a sample or a simple dimensional drawing is often much safer than giving them only "6 mm" or "8 mm."
You may connect it to:
• Traffic cones
• Delineator posts
• Bollards
• Safety posts
• Wall hooks
• Temporary barriers
Before ordering, check how the chain will be connected.
For example, if you are using it with traffic cones, you may need a suitable chain hook.
If you are using it with bollards, the connector may be completely different.
This is something worth checking when you order samples.
There's not much point in getting a good chain if the connector doesn't fit.
There isn't one standard packing method that works for every buyer.
We commonly see requirements such as:
• 25 m per roll
• 50 m per roll
• Custom lengths
The choice depends on how the product will be used and sold.
For project customers, a 50 m roll may be convenient.
For distributors or retailers, shorter rolls can sometimes be easier to handle and sell.
If you are ordering for distribution, also ask about:
• Roll weight
• Roll dimensions
• Carton quantity
• Carton dimensions
• Individual packing
• Custom labels
These details may seem minor, but they become important when you are ordering a full container.
Plastic safety chains are commonly supplied in combinations such as:
• Red / white
• Black / yellow
• Fluorescent yellow
The choice usually depends on the visibility requirements and application.
For outdoor applications, however, I would pay some attention to color stability as well.
A bright color is useful when the chain is being used to mark a restricted area or hazard.
If the chain will be exposed to strong sunlight for long periods, ask the supplier whether the color has been tested for outdoor use.
If you are comparing several Chinese suppliers, don't ask all of them for a price based only on:
6 mm plastic chain, red/white, 50 m roll.
Instead, ask them to confirm the main specifications.

Now you are comparing actual products rather than just comparing numbers on a quotation.
Plastic chain is relatively inexpensive compared with many other traffic safety products.
But that is exactly why getting a sample is usually worth it.
When you receive the sample, check the things that cannot be judged properly from a product photo:
Actual diameter
Weight per meter
Link dimensions
Flexibility
Color
Surface finish
Connector fit
Packing
If the product will be used outdoors, ask the supplier about UV resistance as well.
And if you eventually place a large order, keep the approved sample as the reference for production.
This avoids a common problem:
The buyer approved one sample, but the bulk production is slightly different.
It depends on the application.
For a simple indoor barrier, you may mainly care about price and appearance.
For outdoor traffic control, I would pay more attention to the material, UV resistance and actual weight per meter.
For a distributor, packing and roll length may be just as important because they affect shipping and storage.
In other words, 6 mm doesn't tell you everything.
When comparing suppliers, look at the complete specification:
Material + Weight per Meter + Link Dimensions + UV Resistance + Packing + Connector
That will give you a much better idea of what you are actually buying.
